PPTA Statement on the Documentary “Das Geschäft mit dem Blut”

PPTA has viewed the documentary "Das Geschäft mit dem Blut" / "Le business du sang" that will air on Feb. 21, 2017 in Germany, France, and Belgium on ARTE TV. PPTA strongly objects to the content of the documentary because it is not factual and contains numerous inaccuracies and misinformation.

Primary among them are: the inaccurate characterization of plasma donors in the United States; the inaccurate depiction of the safety of compensated source plasma in the U.S., the safety of the finished therapy and the lack of differentiation between blood and source plasma used for further manufacture.

PPTA's statement is provided to be a resource of factual information regarding Source plasma collection and donation practices. While the ARTE documentary criticizes U.S. Source plasma with false assertions, ARTE could better use its resources to be a part of a European solution to make more Source plasma available in Europe necessary to save and improve patients’ lives—especially those patients who are dependent on access to plasma-derived therapies such as Alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor that treats people with a rare genetic disease called Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and immune globulins (IVIG and SCIG) that treat individuals with rare, chronic, and genetic primary immune deficiency diseases.
